TWINT direct debit: digital solution for recurring bills available from 2027

TWINT is taking the next big leap in the digital transformation of Swiss payments. TWINT direct debit will serve as a modern, digital direct debit solution from 2027. The new service is supported by the largest banks in Switzerland. Users will find paying recurring bills more convenient than ever before, as they can do so directly in their TWINT app. This solution will ensure that billers are prepared for the phase-out of the direct debit procedure (LSV+).

The existing direct debit system (LSV+) will be discontinued on 30 September 2028. TWINT direct debit will launch as a modern, digital solution for recurring invoices in 2027 – in good time before the discontinuation of LSV+. The new solution combines the proven benefits of mandate-based account debiting with the transparency, control and streamlined digital experience that TWINT users are accustomed to. Bill payments remain fully trackable and can be monitored and managed directly in the app.

TWINT direct debit closes an important gap in the digitalisation of payments in Switzerland. This solution will make processing recurring invoices as easy and seamless as paying with TWINT at a cash register or in an online shop. All users will be able to pay via TWINT direct debit at merchants who offer the solution, regardless of which TWINT app they are using.

TWINT and the Swiss banks have built a powerful success story together. This partnership also forms the basis for TWINT direct debit: banks and qualified payment service providers can enable merchants to connect to the solution, thereby ensuring broad availability on the market.

What will change for users?
For over 6 million TWINT users, paying recurring bills will become much easier from 2027. They will be able to grant, manage and view debit authorisations for recurring payments – such as health insurance premiums, streaming subscriptions, club memberships and electricity bills – directly in the TWINT app. Instead of completing paper forms or navigating cumbersome processes, users will be able to keep an eye on all recurring payments and direct debit authorisations in their app – simple, secure and transparent. This functionality applies regardless of which version of the TWINT app they are using. For executed debits, users have the option to raise an objection with the issuer of their TWINT app within 30 days.

What will change for merchants?
TWINT direct debit also offers clear benefits for merchants and billers. More than 6 million private customers are already familiar with TWINT and use it every day, allowing recurring payments to be processed right where Swiss customers already transact. This will mean fewer forgotten invoices. TWINT direct debit will simplify the collection of recurring payments for customers and reduce the administrative workload associated with reminders and manual processes. Positioned as a modern, bank-supported direct debit solution, it is set to seamlessly integrate recurring payments into users’ daily digital lives. Companies that define their 2027 roadmaps now and begin planning the transition to TWINT direct debit early on will be ready when the solution launches.

Markus Kilb, CEO of TWINT: “With TWINT direct debit, we are modernising the direct debit procedure in Switzerland and making paying bills as easy as twinting at a cash register or in an online shop. Together with Swiss banks, we are creating a solution that will make everyday life noticeably easier for millions of people, just as they have come to expect from TWINT.”

TWINT direct debit is part of a wider set of innovations that TWINT is rolling out to make paying invoices easier for both users and merchants in Switzerland. The aim is to simplify and digitalise billing and payment processes in Switzerland for the long term.
