773 million TWINT transactions: more sovereignty for users and merchants

TWINT continued to enjoy strong growth in 2024. Switzerland’s payment app is not only simplifying its users' everyday lives at cash registers and in online shops – the wide-ranging additional features are also proving extremely popular.

Well over half of the Swiss population is using TWINT – mainly at in-store cash registers, but also as a simple means of sending and receiving money between friends and family members. The Swiss population seems to be extremely open to the concept of digital payments, with more than 773 million transactions being made with TWINT in 2024 – more than ever before. As a driving force behind Swiss digitalisation – from supermarket cash registers and online shops to pop-up bars in the summer and stands at weekly markets – it is now hard to imagine everyday life without TWINT due to the flexibility and independence it offers users and merchants in the payment process.

TWINT can be used for a lot more than merely paying for purchases and the splitting of bills among friends after going to a restaurant together. In fact, the app is providing digital innovation in a whole range of usage scenarios. A few figures show the various ways in which TWINT is integrated into everyday life in Switzerland:

  • TWINT gets the population moving: some 77 million transactions were made in the mobility and public transport sectors in 2024.
  • TWINT saves users money: TWINT users have recovered approximately CHF 11 million in the last year, as they have been able to end their parking sessions early in the TWINT app.
  • TWINT brings us together: over 40,000 clubs, associations and charitable organisations use TWINT to collect donations and membership fees as well as to organise events.
  • TWINT is used by the young and the old: the app can be used by people aged 12 and above. The oldest users are over 100 years old.
  • Win with TWINT: TWINT users have spun the wheel of fortune in the new Spin & Win feature in the TWINT app almost 6 million times.
  • TWINT collects points: users have stored well over 1 million loyalty cards, such as the Coop Supercard, Migros Cumulus card, Manor card and many more, in the TWINT app, thus ensuring they can always be accessed in an instant at cash registers.
  • TWINT removes obstacles: since last year, some 46,000 new merchants have been able to offer digital payments without the need for technical infrastructure thanks to the TWINT QR code sticker.
  • Benefit with TWINT: users have benefited from attractive discounts and special offers around 300,000 times with the "Super Deals" feature.
  • Giving gifts with TWINT: more than 3 million vouchers for merchants such as Netflix, Spotify, PlayStation, Zalando and many more have been purchased via the "Digital vouchers" feature in the TWINT app.

Offering a wide range of features that go far beyond the making of payments, TWINT provides innovation exactly where everyday life in Switzerland takes place– whether on a small or large scale, from young to old. TWINT offers Switzerland a degree of independence from global payment groups and tech giants with their wallets. With features developed specifically for use in everyday life in Switzerland, TWINT creates local innovation that has a positive impact on users and merchants.

Markus Kilb, CEO of TWINT, said: "We are delighted that TWINT makes the day-to-day lives of its users easier in an ever-increasing number of situations and provides an element of sovereignty in Switzerland's payment infrastructure. From the perspective of users, the TWINT app is the ideal companion for making digital payments in everyday life. Merchants, in turn, benefit from simplified participation in digital payments and from greater customer loyalty. This is a win for the entire Swiss retail ecosystem!"

While well over 5 million TWINT users can use their smartphones to make payments flexibly and at any time and utilise the wide range of features offered by the app, the Swiss retail sector benefits from technology making transactions easier and offering added value. This includes, for example, the option to use the TWINT QR code sticker to offer cashless payments without the need for a terminal as well as the simple digitalisation of loyalty cards. Such benefits are tailored to the specific circumstances of the local retail landscape. Thanks to TWINT, Switzerland is gaining a degree of independence from global tech providers.
