Pay your parking fee with TWINT: now also possible in the canton of Ticino

Those who go on holiday to Ticino or live in the sunshine canton can now pay for their parking spaces in larger towns with TWINT. Coins are no longer needed and you only pay with TWINT for the time you are actually parked. More than 40,000 parking spaces in around 50 localities are already equipped for accepting payments with the TWINT app. All of the localities where you can pay for parking spaces with TWINT are listed on the website https://www.twint.ch/parking.

In Chiasso, Locarno, Lugano, Melano, Mendrisio, Morbio and other municipalities, it is now possible to use the TWINT app as a means of payment. To do so, all drivers need to do is open the TWINT app, scan the QR code on the parking meter, enter their car registration number on a one-time basis and select the desired parking period in the app. The fee is then paid via TWINT and debited directly from the saved bank account or credit card. Those who leave their parking space earlier than planned can have the remaining amount reimbursed via the TWINT app.

Franco Macchi, Vice commander of the police department Lugano: 'The launch of the digital payment scheme for parking spaces is one of a host of measures supported by the city authorities in recent years. As identified in the 2018-2028 Development Strategy, efficient digital administration is one of the prerequisites for achieving the objectives. The aim is to improve services for citizens, make the best use of environmental and energy resources and promote balanced urban development, focusing particularly on public spaces and mobility.'

Marco Hefti, Head of the Technology division of the Locarno Police Corps: 'We are proud to have initiated a programme for the modernisation of the payment process at our parking meters and now to be introducing a suitable application for smartphones. The option to pay with TWINT represents an important step in this process that will also allow us to keep pace with the requirements in this area of our citizens and those of the many guests who come to Locarno throughout the year.'

This innovative and is made possible by the partnership between TWINT and Digitalparking, the Swiss specialist for car-park management. 'With TWINT, we have found a strong partner. By the end of 2019, Digitalparking will have launched this solution in half of Switzerland’s major towns and cities', says Reto Shläpfer, Managing Director of Digitalparking.

Markus Kilb, CEO of TWINT, added: 'TWINT is Switzerland’s digital cash. We are pleased that this offer can now be rolled out quickly. It is already possible to pay for your parking space without coins in around 50 towns, cities and municipalities. This represents a further useful application of TWINT'.
