BKW and TWINT make charging electric vehicles in Switzerland easier

Working together with the payment system experts from Hectronic, BKW and TWINT are committed to providing greater transparency and combating roaming fees for charging electric vehicles. The aim of this is the considerable simplification and promotion of electromobility in Switzerland. TWINT users can now use the TWINT QR code to charge their vehicles at approximately 300 charging stations in the BKW network and at IKEA stores.

Complicated online interfaces, laborious processes with apps, different payment methods and subscriptions, unclear fee structures and overpriced roaming fees are all standard when it comes to charging electric vehicles. BKW and TWINT are looking to face up to and compete against such conditions together with Hectronic and other partners. After scanning the TWINT QR code on the charging station, the charging process can be started directly within seconds without having to fill in any online forms or arduously type in credit card details.

The electricity prices are shown transparently in the TWINT app before the charging process begins and there are no roaming fees. The charging process can be monitored in the TWINT app and ended at any time. In this way, TWINT is making the charging of electric vehicles just as simple as paying for parking. Thanks to the fraud-resistant TWINT QR code, customers are protected against “Quishing” during the charging process, which involves criminals sticking bogus phishing QR codes on top of legitimate QR codes. In exactly the same manner as with parking meters, the TWINT app is able to identify whether a genuine TWINT QR code has been scanned and displays an error message if this does not happen to be the case.

The new charging process using the TWINT QR code is now available in a nationwide network of charging stations operated by BKW Smart Mobility that currently comprises 300+ charging points, including all the charging stations at IKEA stores. Customers can now do their shopping in the furniture store while also charging their electric vehicle. Thanks to the link-up with TWINT, this process is now easier, more transparent and safer than ever before. Once you have scanned the TWINT QR code, you will immediately and clearly see the price per kilowatt-hour. All you then need to do is tap “Start” to unlock the charging station and begin the charging process.

Over the coming months, TWINT will be working on expanding the charging solution together with other renowned charging station operators – to ensure an even simpler charging process and to promote electromobility.

TWINT has set itself the target of simplifying everyday life through digitalisation and offering users a seamless payment experience. This also applies to the area of mobility. Whether it’s buying a ticket for public transport, paying for parking fees or paying at the fuel pump or charging station – With TWINT, you're on the move simply, quickly and securely.
