FAQ - Using TWINT for big purchases

Can you only use TWINT to pay small amounts or can you also pay larger amounts?

You can, of course, also use TWINT to pay larger amounts.

Please note that there is a difference between paying money to a merchant and sending, receiving and splitting payments among your family and friends.

First of all, the credit in your account or in the TWINT prepaid app is key to how much you can spend with TWINT. With the TWINT prepaid app, the account balance and top-up limits also apply and affect how much you can spend.

When making purchases with a merchant, there are daily and monthly limits (similar to with a Maestro card) for each TWINT app. These can vary from one TWINT app to the next and can also be adjusted by the user in some TWINT apps. For further information on this, please contact the issuer of your TWINT app directly.

The maximum limit for payment with a QR code sticker stands at CHF 5000.

There are maximum limits for sending and receiving money, but these vary from one TWINT app to the next. For further information on this, please contact the issuer of your TWINT app directly. The limits for the TWINT prepaid app are available here.

How can I pay with TWINT at a cash register?

Make sure that the Bluetooth function and location services are activated. Good to know: on Android smartphones, TWINT automatically activates and deactivates Bluetooth. Open the TWINT app with the fingerprint scanner, facial recognition or your PIN code and tap the “Beacon” button. Hold your smartphone up to the TWINT Beacon at a distance of 5 to 10 cm. After the payment has been successfully made, you will see a confirmation in the app.

Cash register with terminal

Ask the cashier whether the terminal supports TWINT payments. If it does, open the TWINT app and tap the QR code symbol in the bottom-right corner. Point your smartphone camera at the QR code displayed on the terminal. After the payment has been successfully made, you will see a confirmation in the app.

Cash register with a QR code sticker

Open the TWINT app and tap the QR code symbol in the bottom-right corner. Point your smartphone camera at the QR code sticker and confirm the payment. In the event of a QR code sticker with a variable amount, enter the amount you wish to pay before confirming the payment.

I am unable to make a payment via a Beacon. What could the problem be?

Inform the cashier that you would like to pay using TWINT or select TWINT as the means of payment at a self-checkout cash register. Check whether your smartphone’s Bluetooth function and location services are activated. Hold the smartphone in front of the Beacon at a distance of five to ten centimetres, open the app and make the payment. It may be the case that a WLAN signal is causing problems. Deactivate the WLAN signal on your smartphone and try again.
